happy friday

I feel like I'm slowly starting to catch up this month. As I've said before, it's been a crazy month for us. We spent last weekend in Salem with my family and it was so good to all be together for the first time in over 5 years. It was the first time that all 9 of my sibling's kids were in the same place so that made for a very happy Grandma Terri and Pop (and aunt Abby!). They played very well together and had a great time. I introduced them to croquet and Ethan was the only one who really liked it, so we played a few games and he was quite pleased when he beat me.

This weekend is the first weekend all month that we will be able to stay at home. I'm trying not to plan too much or try to accomplish everything on my list. It will be nice to just relax and enjoy the weekend and the beginning of summer.

This week I found a lot of links to share with you, so enjoy!

nosy neighbor

I may be one of the nosiest people on earth. When Alex and I go out to dinner, I have a tendency to listen in on our neighboring tables' conversations. While it drives Alex crazy, I get to learn so much about complete strangers. Sometimes it's drama, sometimes it's exciting and sometimes I hear more than I want to...

Last night Alex and I were getting ready for bed when we heard a loud crash/crunch/screech sound, followed by a car alarm. Being nosy I sent Alex outside to see what had happened. He came in and said that a guy had hit a parked car and it wasn't ours, so he was going to bed.

I, on the other hand, was so excited to see how it all played out. So I peered through the curtains (very stealthily) and watched the guy who hit the other car walk around frazzled, the police show up and grill him with questions (Alex said I couldn't open the window to listen in) and I watched as the other guy talked to the police.

There was probably a bit of drama, because how do you hit a parked car and there not be drama?!? Sadly, I ended up falling asleep before I could see how it ended, but it was an eventful end to our evening and I'm very glad our car wasn't involved!

happy friday

This week was a weird mix of busy and slow all at the same time. On Monday, I feel like I blinked and it was Thursday, but each individual day was distinct in and of itself. It's strange how time works. Enough rambling....

On Saturday after I got home from Little Rock, I started catching up on everything I missed from the week and finally cranked out our Oregon trip recap. We had such a great time, I wish life could just be one big vacation- I think that plays into my desire to never grow up, Peter Pan style.

Sunday after church was a big day....we did yard work. While I generally like yard work, this was not a normal day pulling weeds. Why you ask? Because I saw a snake right off of our patio. I screamed like a little girl and forced Alex to kill it. He didn't want to and tried to just move it back into the woods, but I told him that if he didn't kill it, I would never go in our back yard again. Ever. He found the courage to kill it and then moved the nasty creature back into the woods.

The rest of the week was consumed with work and life. On Wednesday my sister Sarah and family flew in from Washington, so we met for lunch and it was great to see them. This weekend, we will be getting together with all of my siblings (and their families) for the first time in a very long time. I'm looking forward to our time together since my brother and his family will be moving to California at the end of the month and Sarah will only be here for a short time.

Other notable weekend activities include (but not limited to): enjoying a t-ball game, celebrating lots of birthdays, family pictures and (potentially) stopping by a baby shower. We have a busy weekend ahead of us and I'm really looking forward to it. With all of the busyness this week I did have time this week to put together a link roundup for your enjoyment! So, click away and enjoy!

This is just gross...I'm glad Alex doesn't have a beard

These are almost all spot on

I'm trying to convince Alex that this would be the best thing for us, so far he's not budging

I don't think we'll make it this weekend, but I want to try to go sometime this summer

This list of questions is too good to be true

I would not have wanted to be in her row on this flight

This should be a (funny) reason why you don't want dentures

I will be adding some of these to my summer reading list

Happy Wednesday!

Oregon adventure

Last year we went to Seattle with my parents. Our returning flight was over sold, so Alex and I volunteered to take a later flight in exchange for free flight vouchers. We had the vouchers for about  three months until they were burning a hole in my pocket so I did what anyone would do, I booked a trip to Oregon!

We didn't have a lot planned while we were there, but we ended up having a great time and relaxed and unplugged. We arrived in Portland late Thursday night so all we did was check into our airbnb house. It was the cutest little suite and very cozy. It was our first airbnb experience and I highly recommend it. It was so easy and much more affordable than a hotel.

Friday we slept in a bit and then headed out to explore the city. We started our day at Sterling Coffee. Alex got a cuppa joe and I got a chai (I still don't like coffee). After our coffee we drove a couple of streets away and window shopped our way to Blue Star Donuts. I got the apple cider fritter and Alex got the raspberry donut and both were delicious! After our donuts we decided to take a hike in Forest Park. Their Forest Park is actually in the forest unlike St. Louis' Forest Park that has very little forest. We hiked up one of the trails and had a nice time talking and exploring.

When we finished our hike we decided to drive out to see the famed Multnomah Falls. It was so pretty and worth the drive. We even got to witness a proposal on the bridge....but if I were her I'd be scared the ring would have fallen off the bridge and be gone forever...they didn't ask my opinion.

After going to the falls, we headed back into Portland to grab lunch at Sizzle Pie and visit the famed Powell's Bookstore. We overheard some interesting conversation at lunch, so it may not be my fondest memory, but it was memorable nonetheless. After the labyrinth that is the bookstore, we headed back to our cozy suite for a nap.

Following our nap we headed out to get some dinner before we crashed again (sightseeing is a lot of work). We ate at Fifth Quadrant and it was very good. I had their mac 'n cheese and salad and Alex had their blackened chicken and we were both stuffed to the gills.

Saturday morning we woke up and headed to Slappy Cakes. It was the restaurant that I was most excited about and it did not disappoint. The premise of the restaurant is: there is a griddle on each table and you choose your batter and toppings and get to make your own pancakes! It was so much fun and it was very tasty! Everyone needs to go when they're in Portland!

After brunch we said adios to Portland and headed west to the coast. We drove to Cannon Beach and then headed south to Lincoln City. We stopped a few times to soak in the view, which was beautiful. It was a little windier and chillier than we had expected, but it was fun anyway.

When we finally got to Lincoln City, we went to the grocery store and grabbed some basics and checked into our second airbnb condo. It was clean and very nice and right on the beach. After we settled in, we took a walk on the beach. We got to see some people crabbing and there were even seals just across the bay that we could see.

Sunday after we woke up, we drove to Drift Creek Falls for a hike. It wasn't a very long hike, but it was so pretty and I'm glad we went. We got to walk over a suspension bridge and then we disobeyed the signs and climbed down the boulders to sit right by the waterfall to eat our lunch.

When we made our way back to the car we drove back down the mountain/large winding hill (?) to see the Devil's Punch bowl (I affectionately referred to it as the fruit bowl). The tide was in so we couldn't explore inside it, but I could see how it would be fun!

Then we got back in the car and drove a little further to see what Newport had to offer...we surmised that there wasn't a lot there that interested us, so we headed back to our condo. We got back and cleaned up and found a nice little bistro for dinner. I can't remember the name, but it was a good dinner.

Our plan for the second half of our trip was to just unplug and we definitely accomplished that. We rented some Redbox movies and just vegged the rest of Sunday night and that was the theme for Monday too. I stayed in my pajamas all day and so did Alex and we watched movies, read, chatted and dozed on and off all day. We ended up making a Papa Murphy's pizza and watching the Cardinals game.

Tuesday came very early (4:00am early). We woke up, packed up and drove back to Portland to catch our flight home.

We had a great trip and we both enjoyed our time away to unwind and unplug from work and everyday life. If the weather was a little warmer, you would have had a hard time getting me to leave the beach, but the hiking and exploring were great too. I don't know if we would have to go to Portland again, but that doesn't discount the rest of the state. Next time we'll need to see everything else, but we will definitely go back to the great state of Oregon.

happy mother's day

Happy Mother's Day mama! I am so thankful for all that you do.  You are kind, patient, gracious and love me unconditionally. You are the best mom in the world and I'm so glad that you're mine. I hope that someday when I'm a mom, I can be half as good as you are. Have a relaxing, restful day and enjoy all the attention that comes your way! I love you!

happy-ish friday

This week has been a whirlwind. It has included, but not limited to: returning from Oregon, unpacking, doing laundry, getting groceries, giving Moose a bath and a haircut, catching up on house work and work work, re-packing and driving to Little Rock.

My grandpa Bob is not doing very well, so my Mom, Becky, Atley and I drove down to see him. My dad was already here and my brother and his family came down as well. We're spending time with him, keeping him company and helping him to stay as comfortable as we can. It's not a particularly easy time, so prayers are incredibly appreciated.

I will work on the Oregon trip recap this weekend and hopefully it'll be up by Monday. I haven't had time to add any of my favorite links from this week, so you're on our own :)

Happy Weekend!

happy friday

Friday is here and I'm so excited about this weekend. We have taken some time away to go on an adventure! We are currently in Portland, Oregon and today we are going to explore the city and see all that there is to see. Tomorrow we plan to head to the coast for a few days to relax and unwind. I will have a full recap of our trip when we return, and of course there will be pictures galore.

While we're away exploring, adventuring and unplugging, I found some links for your reading/viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

trivia night

On Saturday night, Trailhead Students hosted their 2nd annual Trivia Night Fundraiser. It was a great success and our students did a fantastic job! I was very impressed by how they stepped up every time they were needed, it made me a proud little leader. We raised a good amount of money and it will go toward paying for their mission trip this summer and hopefully it'll flow into next year.

happy friday

I am really looking forward to this weekend. It's a little busier than normal, but at least we're not waiting to hear back from a bank!

On Saturday evening we have our second annual Trivia Night fundraiser for our high school youth group. Alex and I have been preparing the prizes, sponsorship donations and the students for an exciting, busy evening. This year our students will be going on a more local mission trip to St. Louis to serve our city's needs, as well as to grow in their faith and walk with Jesus.

There is also the Vintage Market Days in Chesterfield this weekend and I really want to check it out this year, so hopefully we can make it over there.

I hope you have a good weekend planned. If you have some downtime, I found some great links to share. Enjoy!

a bicycle built for two

Last weekend we went to Salem to visit my parents, while we were there my mom and aunt had a surprise for me. It has been on my wish list for a long time and this year it is on my twenty five by twenty six list, so it had to happen.

What is it, you ask? A tandem bicycle!!

I am so excited, I jumped up and down like a little girl when they showed it to me. The bicycle originally belonged to my Noni and Elmer (my grandma and grandpa). They rode it in it's heyday and my goal is to restore it to it's former glory and ride it all over town!

We tried airing up the tires, but the air didn't last through the 5 second bike ride Alex and I took it on (I giggled the whole time) so they'll need to be replaced. The seats are pretty beaten up, so they will need to be replaced or restored. The brakes and chains will need to be checked out and the frame just needs a little elbow grease. Of course I'll be adding a horn and then it will be as good as new.

As soon as it's road ready, you better believe that we'll be riding it as much as possible (or as much as Alex will let me)!

close but no cigar

This week has been one of those weeks that by yesterday I needed a break. To catch you up on last week's news: we put an offer on a house. However, there were several other bids on the house and we didn't win.

There was a bit of disappointment, but mostly relief. We weren't looking for a new house and this one fell in our laps. It was a great price for a lot of space and potential. But, it needed a lot of work. Picture hunter green and mauve carpet, weird lighting and wallpaper, pink counter tops, a master shower straight out of a horror film and a giant water problem in the basement. But, the listing price was too good to pass up so we made an offer...

I was glad that we heard back when we did because we were both about to go nutty waiting. Patience isn't something we pride ourselves on. On the bright side, Alex's parent's closed on their new house and it's just down the road from us, so I would have hated to leave just as they were moving in.

happy friday

We have had one heck of a week! We've had a lot going on but, I'm not quite ready to share all the details. I'm a tease like that ;) Luckily, we don't have too much on the schedule this weekend, but I'm sure we'll find something to occupy our time.

This week I stumbled across these links to share, enjoy!

Go! St. Louis 1/2 marathon

Today I ran in my 4th half marathon and I did it all by myself. It was much more mental than physical this time; I attribute that to being solo, but it was a good race and I'm pleased with my time and performance. I ran my personal best time: 2 hours and 14 minutes (my pace slowed down at around 8 miles...I had to stop to use the loo). I'm very glad that Alex was there to support me and cheer me on.
pre-race

post-race

I didn't get lost...I started my phone too soon.

I really liked the course and it was pretty flat with the exception of the bridges and overpasses, but that's what you get in a city race (in my experience).  We ran over the Eads bridge and then back up the MLK bridge, then down to the Anheuser Brewery and back up to the start/finish line.

I'm glad I ran this race and I'm not planning on hanging my shoes up anytime soon.

happy friday

We have had enough rain this week to make California jealous. While I enjoy a good storm when I'm falling asleep, Moose finds it to be the most terrifying experience ever and shakes like a leaf. Other than that, my cousin's wife Kacey and their two kids came to spend the night with us over their spring break. We played wii and Finley and Scout chased Moose around until they were all 3 worn out. It was fun to have them and they're always welcome to come back!

Our excitement this weekend will be on Sunday morning, it is finally the Go! St. Louis half marathon. My running buddy, Alaina, backed out a few weeks ago so this will be my first solo race. I think I'm ready and I know I'm excited so it should be pretty good. Wish me luck!

This week I found some pretty great links to share, enjoy!

easter + fiesta

Happy Easter Monday! How exciting is it that we serve and celebrate the God who came to live a life among us, who died for our sins and came back to redeem us!?

On Friday we went to our church's Good Friday service and it was a really good service to remember why Jesus had to die for our sins. On Saturday I had an A-Ha! moment when I realized that Saturday had to have been a very hard day for Jesus' disciples; their Messiah had just died and left them wondering what was next. They didn't have our hindsight that Sunday would be such a good and glorious day.

On Easter we celebrated with our Trailhead family and friends. It was the first Easter that we didn't spend with our families, which was a little odd but it was a good weekend nonetheless. We had a few friends come over after church for an Easter Fiesta.

We made beef and chicken enchiladas and also had chips and dips, fruit and strawberry shortcake for dessert. Since the weather was so nice, we ate on the back patio. To bring the fiesta full circle, we listened to mariachi music and sipped on sangria, lemonade and the fellas chose Corona.

To top it all off the fella in the green shirt at the end of the table, Kevin, was baptized on Sunday! How awesome is that?!
(Don't mind Alex's face...he just shoveled a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth)

happy friday

This week was a long, tiring, rough week at the office. We decided to take today off for Good Friday and I'm very glad we did. Alex has one meeting today so he'll work a little, but other than that we are going to rest and tonight we'll go to our church's Good Friday service.

Tomorrow is my last long run in preparation for my half marathon on the 12th and two of my friends said they would ride their bikes along next to me to keep me company. After that we have a little bit of painting left to do in the basement before we can call it complete and some spring yard work that always seems to need to be done.

On Easter, we are going to be staying local for church and then have some friends over for an Easter Fiesta! I'm looking forward to this weekend and I hope the sun will come out and send the rain away.

This week I found some great links to share, so click away my friends and enjoy!

happy friday

We had a pretty good week this week, aside from remembering how scared Moose is of thunder. Every time there was a clap of thunder, Moose was in my arms shaking like a 17 pound leaf. Work is going well and we are very pleased with our new employee, he's doing great. On Thursday, Alex and I went to Peoria for an Erie meeting. It was good to hear how the company is doing and to meet and mingle with other agents.

In some (very) mundane news: Alex is enjoying March Madness, I went to the library and got a new book and my lovely sister forced me to watch recommended that I start Parenthood on Netflix and now I'm addicted...thanks Becky.

All in all, we are ready for the weekend! Tonight we are going to a trivia night fundraiser with my cousin, Libby and her husband, Josh. Tomorrow, all that I have on our schedule is a long run with Alaina. We have 2 weeks til the half marathon so we're getting down to the wire, but I'm pretty confident we'll survive.

This weeks links are pretty great, so click away my friends and enjoy!

rainy day + moose goes to work

I believe that when it's a cold and rainy spring day it should be perfectly acceptable to sleep all day and binge on Netflix. Sadly it is not acceptable and is not what I get to do today.

In other news, Moose is becoming quite a good little office dog. Other than the fact that he leaves his nose and paw prints on the doors and sheds on the couch, he does well and greets our customers with the friendly wag of his tail. Alex added him to our office website as our "Motivation Speaker"...I think it's a bit of a stretch, but our customers have seemed to like it.

I made him give me his best Business Professional look.

happy friday

Today is the first day of spring! Hallelujah, it has finally arrived! This week crawled by, the perfect example: on Monday evening Alex went outside to take our trash around to the front to be picked up...unfortunately our trash day is Thursday. Then I got some sort of stomach bug and was out of commission for a day. I'm glad that this week is behind us and I'm looking forward to this weekend.

We are planning to spend Saturday with Alex's family and if the weather is nice enough I want to spend every waking moment outside because Moose and I have spring fever. Every time we go outside, he sniff's everything he can possibly find. It's annoying but I can't help but let him because we've been cooped up for too long.

This week I found a few good links for your enjoyment. So, click away my friends and enjoy!

happy birthday moose

Our sweet pup is THREE today! I can't believe we have had him for three years. He is finally starting to mellow out a little. But never fear, he is still a happy, (slightly less) wild, excited version of himself. He is a great sock thief, squirrel chaser, running buddy and snuggler. I'm so glad we get to be his people and he's our pup. Happy, happy, happy birthday Moose Man Magoo!

If you want to see how he's grown, check out his first and second birthday's.
